CLAY IMAGES IN THE ART OF ANTONI TAPIES

Merge the construction ceramics with the decorative wall coverings and the art of the handcrafted.

The first contacts between the painter and ceramics took place in 1981, at the request of his friend Chillida and the gallery owner Aimé Maeght. At first he contacts with Joan Gardy Artigas (workshop in Gallifa) and then with the German ceramist Hans Spinner (workshop in Grasse - French Riviera). Tapies primarily emphasizes the sculptural side of his ceramic production and also a set of innovative terracotta works for walls, as well as the use of chamottes and clays. In this way he merges the traditional character of ceramics, as a building material, with the decorative wall coverings and the art of the handcrafted, by using clays that convey an impression of durability and are a statement of principles of life. According to painter Joan Miró: "The work of Antoni Tapies is within the tradition of these explosions that happen from time to time in our country, which stir so many dead things. It is authentically from Barcelona, with universal irradiation. For this he deserves all my admiration".
